The University of Guelph Equestrian Club (UGEC) is a non-profit, student operated club that was formed in 2003. It’s purpose is to provide a base for horse enthusiastic students to get together to talk and learn about horses, ride in lessons, and compete on the intercollegiate circuits in the US and hopefully one day in Canada. In September 2004 the club started hosting lessons out of Countryside Equestrian Centre on Trussler Rd. in Kitchener, Ontario. Philip Parkes took on the job of instructing the eager students who drove out to the barn for weekly lessons during the school year. Under his careful guidance, and with the help of dressage director at the time, Ashlea King, some lucky students were able to attend two Intercolligiate Dressage Association (IDA) shows that February in Ohio, US. During the2005-2006 school year, the dressage team, under the coaching of Philip, attended 7 IDA competitions in Ohio and Kentucky, placing in the ribbons at all of the shows, and finishing with a 4th place overall in the region. Congratulations to Elise Petitjean and Elizabeth Goodale for qualifying as individuals for the IDA national finals. Hopefully next year the team will qualify for the national competition! The IDA website can be viewed at www.teamdressage.com.
